France star could win second World Cup without playing minute in Russia or Qatar

A France star could win his second World Cup winners' medal without playing a single minute in Russia or Qatar.

West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola became the first player in World Cup history to win the tournament before making his international debut four years ago. He was an unused member of the French side in Russia, having earned a call-up to Didier Deschamps' squad without having a senior cap to his name.

Despite going on to make five appearances since, the 29-year-old is still yet to make his World Cup debut during Les Bleus' run to a second consecutive final.

As a result, Areola will likely have two World Cup winners medals without playing in the competition if France can beat Argentina in Sunday's final.

Captain Hugo Lloris has started all but one of France's matches so far in the tournament, with the exception being their final group stage match against Tunisia.

With his side already assured of a place in the round of 16, Deschamps made considerable changes but still did not select Areola, with veteran stopper Steve Mandanda preferred instead.

Had France have lost against Morocco on Wednesday night, Areola may have been handed his World Cup debut in the third place play-off, but it is now unlikely he will feature in the tournament as France prepare for another final.

That will not stop him celebrating at the weekend if his nation are victorious again, though, as he revelled in the moment four years ago in Moscow.

Areola was spotted dancing on the pitch with his team-mates before planting a kiss on the trophy when the squad returned to France. He was also pictured with French president Emmanuel Macron during the celebrations at the Elysee Presidential Palace.

At club level, Areola has made 11 appearances for the Hammers this season since making his loan move from Paris Saint-Germain permanent in the summer.
