Robbie Fowler believes Liverpool have already lost out in this season’s Premier League title race as the Reds icon warned that Manchester City’s flourishing defensive pairing could rule for years to come.

Jurgen Klopp’s champions host the league leaders at Anfield on Sunday knowing that a defeat will deal a serious blow to their aspirations of retiring the title this campaign.

City are in rampant form under Pep Guardiola and have won their last 13 league games, displaying the relentless form that carried them to 100 points in 2017-18.

The injury-hit Reds have been under-par this season and are seven points behind Man City

While their past success has been attributed to their free-flowing attack, it is defensive duo John Stones and Ruben Dias who have provided the platform for City to build on this season.

And Fowler hailed the burgeoning partnership, warning that they could play together for a decade.

‘Dias and Stones seem to compliment each other, and that’s exactly what you want,’ the former City and Liverpool striker told The Mirror.

The Reds legend warned that the pair could dominate in England for the next 10 years

‘The good news for City is that they’re an incredible age as a defensive pairing – they could have 10 years left in them.’

Fowler is adamant that the Stones and Dias partnership will see City reclaim the title come the end of the season, adding that the top prize is ‘gone’ for Liverpool.

‘What I would say as well, is that they will ensure City win the title back this season, even if Liverpool win on Sunday afternoon,’ he added. ‘I do think the title has gone for Jurgen Klopp, in fairness. Not that they’ll be saying that in the dressing room.

‘You always think if you can win the next game things can turn around, they will still believe if they can give everything then they will have half a chance.

Pep Guardiola’s side visit Anfield on Sunday in a mouthwatering clash in the Premier League

‘But I just can’t see it – I can’t see City losing the number of games they’d need to open up the title race. They’ve gone 20 games unbeaten now in all competitions, and they will think they’re back to their very best.’

The under-par champions are in need of a confidence-boosting win this weekend, having seen their imperious Anfield form crumble in recent weeks.

Burnley ended the Reds’ unbeaten run at home before Brighton left Merseyside with all three points in midweek. Liverpool are seven points behind City heading into Sunday’s mammoth clash.
