Vincent Kompany will lead his Burnley team to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening in the hope of getting one over on his former club, Manchester City, and former manager Pep Guardiola. With great anticipation surrounding the tie and Kompany hoping to cause an upset, Express Sport takes you through four prior occasions on which the apprentice has beaten the master…
Mikel Arteta vs Pep Guardiola
Staying on the topic of Guardiola, the former Barcelona manager spent three years flanked by Arteta at City. He was supposedly given significant influence behind the scenes while carefully honing his skills, which would eventually be put to good use after his appointment as Arsenal boss in 2019.
Guardiola has tended to get the better of Arteta whenever the two sides meet, although the Gunners boss did come out victorious when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted twice in the 2020 FA Cup semi-finals. Arsenal then went on to win the trophy with victory over Chelsea at Wembley.

Jose Mourinho vs Louis van Gaal
Two of the firiest personalities on the touchline came head-to-head on the biggest club stage of all in 2010. Bayern Munich, led by the Dutchman, were pitted against Mourinho’s Inter Milan in the Champions League final.
Diego Milito scored both goals as the Nerazzurri came out on top, cementing Mourinho’s second European triumph. The victory was made even sweeter by the short time he spent working under Van Gaal as an assistant at Barcelona in the early 2000s.

Steve McLaren vs Sir Alex Ferguson
McLaren was a relative unknown when he was announced as Fergie’s new Manchester United assistant in 1999. After helping the Scot to three Premier League titles, he began a successful five-year reign at Middlesbrough, during which he inflicted a number of painful results on his former boss.
One meeting left Ferguson particularly battered and bruised as Boro hammered the Red Devils 4-1 at the Riverside in 2005. McLaren held his own against United during that five-year period, winning five out of 12 clashes.
Zinedine Zidane vs Carlo Ancelotti
Zidane has built a reputation as a specialist in the Champions League and Ancelotti felt the full force of that in 2017. A bumper quarter-final saw the Frenchman’s Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich over two legs.
The result was convincing, too, as Los Blancos prevailed 6-3 on aggregate before going on to beat Juventus in the final. Zidane served as Ancelotti’s assistant at the Bernabeu between 2013 and 2014 before eventually beginning his first stint in the top job two years later.
