Four free agents Ten Hag may sign for Man Utd this summer

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Nottingham Forest game

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag knows his side need more if they’re to challenge for the Premier League title next season. And with the Glazers potentially staying at Old Trafford, it’s feasible the Red Devils will be typically restricted when it comes to bringing in new recruits. Express Sport now takes a look at four players the club may target on a free transfer a the summer window creeps closer.

Karim Benzema

Manchester United want a new centre-forward this summer.

Wout Weghorst has failed to live up to expectations, Anthony Martial has been plagued by injuries and Mason Greenwood remains unavailable for selection.

Karim Benzema is widely expected to sign a new Real Madrid contract but, at the current time of writing, no agreement has been reached.

Should Los Blancos win the Champions League one last time, the Frenchman could feasibly feel he’s achieved everything possible at the Bernabeu.

And joining United, and former team-mates Raphael Varane and Casemiro at Old Trafford, could make for a Hollywood ending to his career.

Marcus Thuram

United were linked with Marcus Thuram back in January as they probed a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who departed back in November.

In the end, Weghorst arrived instead.

But Thurham is a talented forward and has scored an impressive 13 goals from 27 Bundesliga appearances, closing up five assists along the way.

There’s been talk of the 25-year-old potentially moving to Bayern Munich amid uncertainty over the future of Sadio Mane.

Yet United would potentially be able to offer him regular game time right away and that could work in their favour.

Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans is a curious case.

Despite long being a consistent performer in the Premier League, nobody has come in for the Belgium international as his Leicester contract ticks down.

United were tentatively linked on transfer deadline day in January when it emerged Christian Eriksen was facing a spell on the sidelines.

And it’s feasible they’ll go in for Tielemans once he’s a free agent.

United want another midfielder – and the 25-year-old, with his Premier League experience, could be a useful recruit.

Wilfried Zaha

Second time a charm?

United previously signed Wilfried Zaha all the way back in January 2013, with the forward Sir Alex Ferguson’s last recruit.

However, he was sold back to Crystal Palace for just £3million having failed to live up to expectations.

Zaha has flourished ever since, regularly helping Palace punch above their weight in the top flight.

His contract is due to expire in the summer and with Ten Hag starting to grow impatient when it comes to Jadon Sancho, a blockbuster return would suit all parties.

What free agents have United signed in recent years?

United opted to sign Eriksen on a free transfer back in the summer, once his Brentford contract expired.

And the Denmark international has been good at Old Trafford ever since, quickly establishing himself as a trusted Ten Hag player.

In 2020, they landed Edinson Cavani.

Though he’d later fall behind Ronaldo in the club’s pecking order, a total of 17 goals across all competitions during his first season with the Red Devils made him a shewd signing.

Arguably the best of the lot, however, was Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who fired the club to Europa League and Carabao Cup glory upon moving from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016.
