Former Stoke and Newcastle striker Joselu netted a crucial winner for Alaves as they saw off fellow strugglers Real Valladolid 1-0 at Mendizorroza.
Alaves went into the game in the bottom three and faced off against 16th-placed side Valladolid, having just picked up their first point in three games under new boss Abelardo Fernandez.
The only goal of the game came in the 66th minute via former Arsenal forward Lucas Perez, who started the move when he played Martin Aguirregabiria clear down the flank with a well-placed pass between two defenders.
Joselu’s improvised finish midway through the second half was enough to give Alaves the win
The victory gave new manager Abelardo his first win in charge since taking over last month
Joselu then cleverly redirected Aguirregabiria’s precise low cross just inside the far post for what proved to be the eventual winner.
The hosts held on and the result means Alaves leapfrog the visitors into 15th with their first win under Abelardo, with Valladolid in 17th after five games without a victory.
Up next, Alaves travel to face Barcelona on February 13, while Valladolid visit Eibar on the same day.
