Former Man City financial advisor says guilty breaches ‘must’ lead to relegation

A financial advisor who used to work on behalf of Manchester City has claimed the club's alleged financial breaches must lead to relegation from the Premier League.

The Premier League announced on Monday morning that the division's reigning champions had been charged with more than 100 breaches of its financial rules following a long-running investigation.

The breaches, which are alleged to have taken place between 2009 and 2018 – a period when City won three top-flight titles – have seen City referred to an independent commission. Pep Guardiola's side are also accused of not co-operating since the investigation, which started in December 2018.

City could face a range of punishments if allegations against them are proven, and a former financial advisor to the club believes the current champions should be relegated if that is the case.

Going by the handle @slbsn on Twitter, he tweeted: "Alarmist or not, the sheer extent of the PL charges are at a level that IF found proven, must lead to relegation."

That provoked a response from one follower, who said: "Not going to happen, damages the PL brand." To which Stefan, who is also allegedly a City fan, replied: "So does laying such charges and then not getting a ruling."

Relegation is one of the possible sanctions that City could face if allegations against them are proven. They could also be expelled from the league altogether, imposed with a financial penalty or have titles stripped away.

It is a quite incredible scenario that the Cityzens find themselves in, and one that they have greeted with surprise of their own. A statement from them read: "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.

"The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position. As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all."
