Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez suffers heart attack

Former Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez is recovering in hospital after suffering a reported heart attack.

The Chilean, who played for the Reds under Rafael Benitez during the 2006/07 season either side of spells in Spain, retired in 2019.

His wife, Maura Rivera, broke the news with a post on Instagram detailing her shock at the sudden occurrence.

“The love of my life, my soul mate, what a shock you have given me. The past few nights have been terrible. Days filled with uncertainty, it’s been really frightening,” she wrote.

“I am writing this as you are still here with us and a little better — and because in many ways, the fact that you are still here with us, makes us cherish every moment we have together, family and above all, life itself.”

Confirming that Gonzalez had suffered a heart attack, Rivera noted that she was posting the matter on Instagram to “show that not everything on social media is always beautiful, that we are people the same as everyone else who have low moments of fear”.

Another former club of Gonzalez’s, Real Betis, posted to Twitter their support and noted that he was “recovering” after the ordeal.

The winger played at two World Cups with his national team and also represented the likes of CSKA Moscow and Universidad Catolica during his club career.
