Former Boca Juniors star Zarate jailed after being found guilty of manslaughter
Former Boca Juniors defender Nahuel Zarate is planning to appeal after being sentenced to five years in prison.
Zarate was also disqualified from driving for ten years having been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
The ex-professional footballer began his career with the South American giants, and went on to play for Godoy Cruz, Union, Atletico Tucuman, Fenix, Gimnasia Jujuy and CA Guemes as recently as last weekend.
Argentinian media report that the footballer was over the drink-drive limit and was doing 118mph when he hit the back of a taxi back in 2018, causing the deaths of two men.
Both 55-year-old Norberto Rodolfo Brienza and 54-year-old Nestor Francisco Mormandi were killed instantly in the collision – with lawyers acting on their behalf calling for a sentence of over a decade.
Ole report that Zarate was speaking on his mobile when the crash took place at the intersection of Avenida General Paz with Madariaga which is a motorway surrounding Buenos Aires.
Camera footage is said to show Zarate's car smashing into the taxi at high speed before continuing into a nearby roadside crash barrier before coming to a halt.
Zarate is said to be planning an appeal, but his career as a professional left-back appears to be all but over at the age of 28 following his Boca breakthrough eight years ago back in 2013.
Zarate played 30 times for Boca in the league, making a further 23 outings while on loan at Godoy Cruz.
A spell with Union added another 20 outings, with eight coming at both Atletico Tucuman and Fenix.
