Former Arsenal boss Unai Emery set to join Newcastle United on one condition
Unai Emery is set to become the new Newcastle United manager if the club are prepared to pay him the sort of salary the Spaniard earned at Arsenal.
Newcastle’s search for a new manager continues with Steve Bruce leaving his post in the weeks that followed the Saudi-led takeover of the St James’ Park club.
Villarreal boss Emery is understood to be the club’s preferred option with The Athletic now reporting the shortlist is now down to two candidates, with former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe their alternative option.
Emery is the leading contender however with Newcastle hoping to finalise an agreement.
The report adds Newcastle are expected to pay Villarreal around £5.1million in compensation.
The club are also still working to finalise personal terms with Emery hoping to receive an offer similar to the one he got at Arsenal.
The Spaniard was reportedly on a £6m-a-year deal at the Emirates before being dismissed after 18 months in charge.
On Monday, Emery indicated he knew nothing of Newcastle’s interest in bringing him back to the Premier League.
However, when asked about the speculation linking him with a move to Newcastle, Emery replied: ‘The truth is that I do not know anything.’
Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League and are without a win in their opening 10 games.
