Forgotten Man Utd prodigy Adnan Januzaj released by club aged 27
Former Manchester United prodigy Adnan Januzaj has been released by Real Sociedad aged just 27.
Sociedad announced the Belgian winger will leave at the end of the season after five years with the La Liga side. Januzaj’s departure comes having played 167 games for Los Txuri-Urdin and netted 23 goals in that period.
He won a Copa del Rey during his time with the Basque club and ended the season with five goals and three assists across all competitions. His contract expiry comes at the same time as former Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal’s, resulting in both of the experienced stars looking for a new club this summer.
An official club statement read: “Real Sociedad announces that Adnan Januzaj and Nacho Monreal will not continue at the club from next season.
“The Royal Society thanks Adnan Januzaj and Nacho Monreal for their commitment, dedication and effort made during their stay with us, while wishing them the best for their personal and professional future."
After not being offered a new contract by sixth-placed Sociedad, there will always remain a question of where Januzaj would be now if he fulfilled the promise shown initially at Old Trafford.
Why did it all go wrong for Adnan Januzaj at Man Utd? Let us know in the comments section.
Januzaj came through the United youth ranks and broke into the first team during the 2013/14 season.
He featured 35 times for the Red Devils that season, scoring four goals and assisting six across all competitions as a teenage prospect.
However, he struggled to make the same impact under David Moyes’ successors Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. And after two unremarkable loan moves to Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland, Januzaj signed a five-year contract with Sociedad which has now come to an end.
