Forgotten Chelsea star Danny Drinkwater calls his Blues career a "shambles"
Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has hit out at his current club during a loan spell at Reading having spent the last four seasons out on loan.
The English midfielder joined the Blues in 2017 for £35million from Leicester City, having won the league with the Foxes just two seasons prior to the move.
With such a significant price tag and the opportunity to link up with N’Golo Kante again, who he formed a superb partnership with during the historic title win at Leicester, Drinkwater looked set to be a roaring success at Stamford Bridge.
However, it has been the complete opposite for the midfielder and he is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
After making just 12 league appearances during his first season at Chelsea, the 31-year-old spent the following four years out on loan at Burnley, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa and now Reading, where is currently.
Speaking to TalkSport after Reading’s away win over Fulham last weekend, Drinkwater took aim at his parent club. He said: “Can I paint a picture? No. It’s been a shambles.
“I need to [kick-start my career]. I’m more excited about this than I have been for a few years now, especially how my career’s panned out.
“Games, getting the enjoyment of football back, then going from there. A few have slid away, I’ve made mistakes, I’ve not played.
Will a Premier League club sign Danny Drinkwater? Let us know in the comments section…
“I’m in the last year of my contract, so there’s more than just football riding on it. I’ve got other things.
"I’ve just got to keep in contact with the manager, trust each other and trust the team. Hopefully, they trust me and we can build on that."
It is uncertain whether the current Royals midfielder, who has made three appearances for England, will be signed by a Premier League club when his contract expires but plenty of Championship clubs will be interested.
Drinkwater has every right to regret his move to Chelsea, and the club will question why they signed him too.
Just a month and a half before the Manchester United academy product was purchased, the Blues signed Tiemoue Bakayako for £40million from Napoli.
The Frenchman went on to be a regular in the midfielder alongside Kante and rotating with Cesc Fabregas, so spending big money on Drinkwater was far from necessary.
