Forget the penalty: Girl’s reaction to getting Mount’s England shirt is best moment from Euro semi
The penalty kick that won the Euro 2021 semifinal for England remains the major talking point, but there was another moment from that match that will be even more memorable for one fan in attendance.
Over 64,000 people packed London’s Wembley Stadium for the England vs. Denmark semifinal, but there was one girl in the crowd, in a corner of the stadium, who was singled out for a pretty special postgame parting gift.
England midfielder Mason Mount, with his jersey in hand, was saluting the Wembley crowd with his teammates following the win, when he broke through security toward a section of the fans, handing his shirt to a girl holding an England flag.
Her reaction and the long hug that followed will warm your heart, no matter how you felt about the penalty:
The 22-year-old Mount is a rising star in world soccer, proving a vital cog in the Chelsea team that won the 2021 UEFA Champions League over Manchester City. The Chelsea academy product got his first-team breakthrough under Frank Lampard in 2019 and has never looked back. Now he’s become a key part of England’s national team in the run to its first Euro final in history.
Mount played in four of England’s six matches in this Euro 2021 tournament. He missed out on the final group game against the Czech Republic and the Round of 16 match against Germany after having to self-isolate because he was a close contact to a positive COVID-19 case, Chelsea teammate and Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour.
He’s winning over fans every game with his workrate and quality play on the field, becoming one of the more likeable figures with Chelsea and England. Authentic gestures like the one on Wednesday won’t hurt.
