Footballer who killed ex-girlfriend and fed her to dogs signed by team

Premier League clubs spend record £815m in January transfer window

A goalkeeper who was charged with plotting the murder of his mistress has returned to football, being signed by Brazilian side Orion Futebol Clube. The 38-year-old was sentenced to 22 years behind bars but was granted parole in January, and he has wasted no time in returning to sport.

Bruno Fernandes de Souza confessed to ordering the murder of his girlfriend Eliza Samudio in 2010. The model and actress was kidnapped by a gang and tortured before eventually being strangled and killed.

Bruno was sentenced to 22 years in March 2013 after a court heard the evidence against him. The initial ruling was a ‘closed prison sentence’ though that was converted to ‘semi-open’ in 2019, meaning that Bruno could work during the day as long as he returned to prison every night.

The 38-year-old was then told that he was able to sleep in his own bed due to the inadequate facilities at Varginha Prison, as long as he remained at home between 8pm and 6am. Having proven he was capable of that, Bruno was granted parole by the Rio de Janeiro Court of Justice in January.

Bruno was keen to return to football and has now been signed by Sao Paulo side Orion Futebol Clube, who took to social media to announce that they had signed a ‘backup player’. It remains to be seen how fans react to the news or whether his performances on the pitch prevent a widespread uproar, given that he played for top Brazilian sides Corinthians and Flamengo previously.

The shot-stopper met Samudio at a ‘sex party’ in 2017 and she soon fell pregnant, much to the annoyance of Bruno. He ordered her to have an abortion but the model was keen to have a child – now named Bruninho (Little Bruno).

Samudio threatened to take legal action against Bruno after he refused to claim paternity of the child or pay any support, though Bruno hit back by telling his ex-mistress that he would kill her and that she didn’t know what he was ‘capable of’, whilst she was being held at gunpoint.

Months later, Samudio was lured into a car and driven to Bruno’s home where she was beaten by a gang – which included Bruno’s wife as well as a former policeman. Following six days of torture, the 25-year-old was then strangled to death in front of her son before being cut into pieces and fed to dogs, according to reports. Samudio’s disappearance soon hit the media as search parties began trying to find the actress, prompting Bruno’s cousin to hand himself in to the police and explain what had happened and how he was paid by Bruno for his part in the murder.
