Footballer ‘viciously assaulted’ during game

An amateur footballer has suffered a “sickening head injury” following an alleged on-field brawl during a pre-season game in Adelaide last week.

As revealed by The Messenger’s Daniela Abbracciavento, local police were called to a match between Adelaide Croatia Vukovi and Ghan Kilburn City at Parafield Gardens Soccer Club on Sunday, February 21st.

A South Australia Police spokeswoman said an on-field incident led to a large fight involving players and spectators.

According to The Messenger, the fight erupted after Ghan scored a goal and players wrestled to bring the ball back into play.

Two people sustained injuries.

Adelaide Croatia released a statement on Facebook last week, claiming one of their players was “viciously assaulted” during the ordeal.

“As the club will be pursuing criminal charges and due to SAPOL’s and potential legal involvement, we will not be commenting further on the details of the incident so as to not jeopardise any future proceedings against the alleged attacker,” the statement read.

“We congratulate the conduct of all of our players and supporters in trying to calm down a hostile and aggressive opponent/situation and trust that justice will prevail in light of this disgraceful attack.

“We also thank all those who rendered assistance after the sickening head injury that was inflicted on our player.

“We will continue to co-operate with the league and police in this matter and appreciate that all supporters and members of the club be patient while we work with the relevant authorities.

“There is absolutely no place in our game for what transpired yesterday and trust in the process that the right outcome will be achieved.”

The South Australian Amateur Soccer League has launched an investigation into the incident, and both teams have reportedly been suspended from the Templin Cup competition.
