Football team have to play nine games in eight days in to finish season on time

A football team have been left with nine games to play in eight days in order to finish their league season on time.

Sandhurst Town of the tenth tier are in the impossible position of having more matches than days remaining before the final day of the Combined Counties Football League Division One campaign next Saturday. Having previously had just 13 days to fulfil their final 10 matches, a series of fixture postponements have now left the club with nine matches to play before April 22.

The burden was eased on Sandhurst on Thursday night after the club fell to a 2-1 defeat at home to league leaders Berks County in their latest match.

Six of the remaining nine matches have been scheduled on the league's website, with the remaining three postponed fixtures yet to be given dates.

Sandhurst will currently play six times in the next eight days up to the scheduled final day of the season, with an extension then needed to complete their last three games if they do not face any further postponements.

The Fizzers start their gruelling week of football on Saturday with a trip to take on Eversley & California. The players will receive a rest on Sunday and Friday before their final scheduled match at home to Rayners Lane next Saturday.

Sandhurst had originally had all of their remaining matches scheduled across a 13-day period starting last weekend, before several matches were postponed.

Those included Wednesday night's clash with Brook House, which is now one of three matches without a date scheduled. The game was called off after Brook House were unable to travel and fulfil the fixture – the second day in a row it had to be axed.

Fans have been quick to comment on the situation after being made aware of Sandhurst's predicament, with one tweeting: "Lower leagues need to get midweek games in earlier in the season because this is wild…"

Another added: "If the players survive this long on full intensity without injury they are superhuman." A third also wrote: "Just extend the season. With all disrespect to these men I doubt they have summer international commitments."

Bizarrely, despite their fixture congestion, fifth place Sandhurst can still finish as champions and earn promotion from the Combined Counties Football League Division One.
