A Bundesliga player has been arrested by police in Ibiza on suspicion of raping a Spanish teenager.
The footballer was held along with a man after the 18-year-old told detectives she had been sexually assaulted at a villa in the municipality of San Jose a short drive from the island airport.
Well-placed sources said she had been admitted to hospital after the incident.
The two men, who are both German, are understood to have been held on Wednesday.
The alleged rape police are probing is said to have occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
It was not immediately clear on Saturday morning if the men arrested have appeared before an investigating judge in an initial court hearing.
The behind-closed-doors hearing would take place to decide whether they should be released on bail pending an ongoing criminal probe or remanded in custody.
The arrested footballer has just extended his existing contract with his club, one of Germany’s most successful clubs.
It has won the national championship a number of times.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard confirmed: “Two German nationals have been arrested after a woman told police she had been sexually assaulted in Ibiza.
“An investigation is ongoing.”
A well-placed source said: “One of the two men is a footballer who plays in the Bundesliga.”
German papers are yet to pick up on the arrest but it has been reported by a Spanish-language Ibizan newspaper.
Neither of the two men arrested have been named in the local press.
The villa where the alleged sex attack is said to have occurred is understood to be near Cova Santa, an ancient natural cave with a large restaurant, lounge garden and club where shows and concerts are organised during the summer.
Court officials could not be reached early on Saturday morning for comment on the case.
