Football hooligan parades round stadium with chainsaw as thugs start huge fire

A football hooligan brandished a chainsaw as a stadium was set on fire in alarming scenes that took place during a CAF Champions League quarter-final.

Tunisian outfit Esperance Sportive de Tunis were hosting Algeria's JS Kabylie in the second-leg of their last eight showdown and progressed 2-1 on aggregate.

However, it was not footage of action on the pitch that spread across social media, but rather a fire that was lit just meters from the pitch with one fan even using a chainsaw.

In a clip shared online by Tunisian journalist Souhail Khmira of BBC Africa, violent scenes broke out after what was been described as a peaceful first-half at the home of the Tunisian champions.

The video showed a small fire break out next to the security fences that stopped fans getting onto the pitch, while another spectator aggressively rattled the bars.

With debris mounting underfoot, the chainsaw operator stepped back to get the tool up and running as two others nearly set themselves alight as they successfully got the flames to spread.

Despite thick black smoke bellowing into the air, the game miraculously went on as planned with the fire behind the running track at the Hammadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades.

Further images showed a man with his shirt around only his neck holding the chainsaw in the air, as well as it being proudly snapped outside the 60,000 seater stadium.

It was later reported that the man in question was detained and taken into police custody, with investigations continuing.

With another CAF Champions League quarter-final between Raja AC and Al Ahly in Casablanca also being marred by fan unrest, the governing body were forced to release a statement. Esperance de Tunis are set to play Al Ahly in the last four.

CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba said: "The scenes in Tunis and Casablanca were unacceptable and we cannot tolerate this in football.

"We condemn unruly actions by some supporters in the strongest terms. CAF will hand over the matter to our judicial structures for further investigation."
