Football fan stunned as ex-Premier League manager returns wallet he lost on tube

A football fan was left stunned after the wallet he lost on a London tube was returned to him by former Premier League manager Alan Curbishley.

Walsall season-ticket holder Oli Swift had given up hope of finding his wallet and cancelled his cards after losing it while travelling in London last week.

The 30-year-old attended Walsall’s 1-1 draw with Newport County in League Two on Saturday and was gobsmacked to find his lost wallet waiting for him at the club.

It was returned with a note written and signed by Curbishley, who managed Premier League clubs Charlton Athletic and West Ham after spending almost 20 years as a professional footballer.

The note read: ‘Dear Oli, hope this finds you well. I found your wallet on a tube in London. Hopefully it has not caused you too much stress. Now you can get in to see your team!!’

The lifelong Walsall fan told SWNS: ‘Last Monday I was down in London and I lost my wallet on the tube somewhere between White City and Euston station. I didn’t realise it was missing until I got out at Euston.

‘I cancelled all my cards and didn’t think I would ever see the wallet again, I just assumed it was a goner.

‘On Saturday I was at the Walsall match with my sister. She was at the ticket office getting a ticket when someone recognised her surname and asked did your brother lose his wallet in London?

‘I was already in the match and she called me to ask could the wallet be mine, I said yes, and then she told me Alan Curbishley had found it and posted it to the club.

‘I was so shocked I couldn’t believe it. Alan had found the wallet on the tube, saw my season ticket and called the club to ask if I was still going to matches and then posted it to them.

‘He must have thought it was as good as any way to get it to me.’

The supporter says he suspected the note might be fake but looked up Curbishley’s signature online to confirm it was real.

‘Of all the people that could have found the wallet I never would have imagined it would be a professional footballer and manager,’ he added.

Curbishley is still regarded as a club legend at Charlton, having spent over a decade at The Valley and taking the Addicks into the Premier League.

Ahead of the 2021-22 season, Charlton announced that the East Stand of their stadium would be renamed the ‘Alan Curbishley Stand’ to mark the 30th anniversary of Curbishley joining the club.
