Foden fails to give Haaland simple tap in for second Man City game in a row

Phil Foden has come in for criticism from Manchester City fans after failing to spot Erling Haaland in a good position for the second game in a row.

City came out fighting to secure a 3-3 draw against Newcastle, having at one stage been 3-1 behind in the contest. But they initially took the lead in the match when Ilkay Gundogan slotted past Nick Pope after just five minutes at St James' Park.

Pep Guardiola's side had a series of excellent chances to extend their lead before the Magpies hauled themselves back into the tie, one of which fell to England midfielder Foden.

Gundogan played the 22-year-old star in down the left hand side and he saw his effort saved by the feet of Pope. However, it didn't escape the notice of City fans that Haaland was free for a tap-in in the middle of the box.

Supporters vented their fury at Foden's wastefulness on social media. One person wrote: "All of this is Foden’s fault, pass to Haaland, 2-0 and the game is done."

Someone else said: "Foden hates Haaland. How many chances does he need to slide it across to Haaland for a tap in." Another user commented: "Foden didn't cut back to haaland for the 2nd match in a row."

As a fourth person went in harder than a Patrick Vieira tackle, adding: "Foden is such a selfish p****, he ignores Haaland in the best scoring situations."

City fans were especially displeased with Foden as he also failed to play in Haaland during a similar situation in their 4-0 win over Bournemouth last week. Guardiola was less than impressed on the touchline.

While Foden's selfishness didn't make a difference last week, this time, it cost City. Newcastle came roaring back with three superb goals in 26 minutes either side of half-time from Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier to make it 3-1.

But the game wasn't done there and the visitors soon staged an impressive fightback of their own. First, Haaland fired home from close range and then Bernardo Silva got his name on the scoresheet for 3-3.

That was how it finished as the Premier League's two richest clubs shared the spoils on a pulsating afternoon in the north east.
