FIFA accused of trolling Ronaldo with ‘unnecessary’ World Cup post they deleted

FIFA have been accused of trolling Cristiano Ronaldo with a "totally unnecessary" World Cup social media post.

The official World Cup Twitter account had uploaded an image of Ronaldo with his thumb up along with the words: “Thumbs up if you really enjoyed the #FIFAWorldCup.” However, the post has since been deleted after a number of angry fans hit out at FIFA and slammed the decision to use an image of Ronaldo alongside the tweet.

The 37-year-old has been ridiculed on social media in recent days after his long-time rival Lionel Messi won the World Cup, the one trophy Ronaldo has yet to win, for the first time.

Responding to the now deleted tweet, one fan wrote: “After all he has had this year, this post was totally unnecessary.”

Meanwhile, another added: “FIFA has been posting and deleting tweets of them indirectly mocking Ronaldo for the past few days. One was made about an hour ago and deleted again. I thought it was a neutral body? Shame on them.”

The backlash comes a day after another World Cup tweet taking a sly dig at Ronaldo was deleted. The post included an image of Messi after Sunday's final.

Alongside the image of him holding the man of the match trophy, the tweet read: “The GOAT debate is settled. The ultimate prize is now part of the collection. The legacy is complete.”

Ronaldo endured a difficult World Cup campaign with Portugal, despite scoring from the penalty spot in their opening win over Ghana.

He then had a goal taken off him after the victory against Uruguay, with a review deeming that he had not touched the ball on its way in and instead awarded the goal to Bruno Fernandes.

His tournament then went from bad to worse as he was dropped for the round of 16 clash with Switzerland due to his angry reaction to be taken off against South Korea in Portugal's final group match.

Ronaldo's replacement, Goncalo Ramos, scored a hat-trick in a 6-1 mauling of Switzerland to set up a last eight meeting with Morocco, which Portugal would go on to lose. Ronaldo was seen in tears as he trudged down the tunnel at full-time.

As Messi lifted the trophy on Sunday, Ronaldo had already been out of the World Cup for over a week and remains on the hunt for a new club having left Manchester United by mutual consent last month.
