Argentina star Enzo Fernandez reportedly left a post-match interview after being misidentified by a journalist. The midfielder has been in flying form at the World Cup, further justifying why numerous top clubs are interested in signing him.

Argentina booked their spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 victory over Poland. Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring for the South American outfit in the 46th minute before Julian Alvarez put the game to bed just 19 minutes later.

Poland also advanced to the knockouts, by goal difference, meaning that spirits were generally high at the Rosa Abu Aboud Stadium. However, the mixed zone after the match did host a minor spat.

According to Miguel Delaney, a journalist asked Fernandez: “Could this be the World Cup of Enzo Perez?” The 21-year-old aptly replied ‘I am Enzo Fernandez’ before walking off.

Perez hasn’t made an appearance for Argentina since 2018 and currently plays his football with River Plate, aged 36. He spent three years at Benfica and, like Fernandez, broke onto the scene with hopes of being a pivotal figure on the international stage.

Though if Fernandez can continue to progress as he has been then he should easily surpass Perez’s 26 international caps total. The midfielder was on the scoresheet against Mexico last week to truly put himself on the map, curling a sensational effort into the top corner late on.

Manchester City and Liverpool have both been linked with signing Fernandez over the past few months, despite him joining Benfica over the summer. And his good form in Qatar has reportedly led to United sitting up and starting to take notice of the young prospect.

Benfica signed Fernandez before the start of the season for a mere £10million, and they are not keen to cash in on his services just yet. According to reports in Portugal, the midfielder is only set to be allowed to leave the Estadio da Luz if his release clause is met – which is believed to be in the region of £103m.

Of course, all of the aforementioned clubs would be able to meet that clause – though they will have other transfer targets, namely Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund, who will cost more than Fernandez.

The England international is set to leave the Bundesliga outfit at the end of the season, with a bidding war expected for the former Birmingham City star.
