Fernandes says first trophy for Man United is an 'amazing' feeling

‘I want more, much more’: Bruno Fernandes says first trophy for Manchester United is an ‘amazing’ feeling but says the club are striving for further success

  • Man United claimed the first trophy of the season beating Newcastle at Wembley
  • Goals from Casemiro and an own goal saw club claim first trophy for six years
  • Bruno Fernandes said that he and his team-mates are now striving for more

Bruno Fernandes has described the feeling of winning his first trophy as a Manchester United player as ‘amazing’ – but outlined his desire for further success.

The Portuguese captained the side as they overcame Newcastle United in the first domestic final of the season at Wembley.

Goals from Casemiro and a Sven Botman own-goal six minutes apart saw Erik ten Hag’s side claim the Carabao Cup.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the pitch in the immediate aftermath of the triumph, Fernandes said they had been ‘searching for this moment’ and now they had it, they wanted ‘more’.

‘We have been searching for this moment, us, the fans and the club,’ he said. ‘We are all together and finally we get our trophy, I think deservedly.

Fernandes said he and his team-mates are now hungry for further success at the club

‘It has been an amazing period (so far this season), but we want and need more, it is not enough for this club.

‘I am satisfied, because now I get my trophy, but I want more and we want more.’

United came into the game as favourites, having enjoyed a brilliant start to the calendar year, perhaps best exemplified by their exhilarating victory over Barcelona on Thursday night.

In front of a raucous Wembley Stadium, they allowed their comparatively superior experience in such big games, garnered through the likes of Rapahel Varane and Casemiro, two players to have enjoyed remarkable success elsewhere, to shine through.

Under pressure for much of the second half, United’s defence stood firm and could have added further goals, notably through Fernandes himself at the end of added time.

Ten Hag’s side remain in contention for three further trophies this season. They advanced to the last-16 of the Europa League, while they face West Ham in the fifth round of the FA Cup next week.

The Premier League title remains a possibility, with Ten Hag’s side eight points off leaders Arsenal having played the same number of games.

The Dutchman, also speaking to Sky Sports after the game, said his players could take ‘inspiration’ and ‘confidence’ from the victory.
