Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is one of Erik ten Hag’s six player leadership group at Old Trafford for the upcoming season.

Fernandes was named as United’s new captain ahead of the 2023/24 season on Thursday, taking over from Harry Maguire who held the armband since he arrived from Leicester City for £80million in 2019.

And the Portuguese is also central to Ten Hag’s new leadership group at United as the Dutchman looks to build a core group of lieutenants to keep the dressing room in order.

Fernandes is said to be part of a six man group tasked with setting the standards at Carrington and on the pitch as the squad touchdown in the US to start their pre-season tour.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the skipper has stood out as a leader since he joined the club in January 2020.

And he’s joined by his midfield partner Casemiro in the group, who is the obvious choice after a trophy-laden career at Real Madrid and having played a vital part in his first season at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag is yet to name a number two to Bruno as of yet and the Brazilian’s inclusion and reputation could point to him being a worthy candidate.

It’s said that World Cup winner Raphael Varane will also be a part of the group whilst a strong homegrown representation has also been appointed.

Luke Shaw is also named one of the six whilst former academy graduates and Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year Marcus Rashford and goalkeeper Tom Heaton complete the line-up.

Despite Heaton yet to feature in the Premier League for the Red Devils, the 37-year-old has 116 top-flight appearances to his name at Burnley and Aston Villa.

Surprisingly, there isn’t a place for former captain Maguire amongst the group, which could indicate a potential exit from the club with him reportedly valued at £50million.
