Bruno Fernandes has admitted Manchester United players feel ‘disappointed’ after their 6-3 defeat to Manchester City on Sunday. The Red Devils were put to the sword by their fierce rivals, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden netting hat-tricks for the home side. And the result means Erik ten Hag’s team now look unlikelier than ever to win the Premier League title this season.

Manchester United had been starting to build some momentum prior to their match with City, having won five of their last six matches across all competitions.

But they were dealt the ultimate reality check by Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday, with the hosts superior in every department.

United fell 4-0 down at half time against their rivals, with Foden and Haaland both bagging braces in the first 45 minutes.

And though the Red Devils were able to pull some goals back through Antony and a brace from Anthony Martial, further goals from Foden and Haaland gave City all three points.

Fernandes was asked about the result after the game.

And, speaking to United’s official website, he admitted he and his team-mates were ‘disappointed’ by the result.

“The belief in the beginning was not the best and I think that caused us many problems and made us concede early goals,” he said.

“I think the second half was much better. We kept control more, we controlled the game whenever we had the ball.

“We were down on the result, so we had to take some risks. And obviously, when we took that risk, we scored straight away.

“We tried to [go forward] a little bit more but then we conceded more goals. You can’t give that much space to City.

“Obviously, we are really disappointed. But now it is time to focus on the next game and we have to get back the performances we did before [the international break], and the belief and togetherness, and understand this cannot get us down.

“We need to improve for the future.”

Fortunately for United, they won’t have long to wait until they step out onto a football field again.

The Red Devils are primed to lock horns with Omonoia Nicosia in Cyprus on Thursday in their third Europa League game of the season.

Then, on Sunday, they’re due to face Everton at Goodison Park.

And Fernandes has admitted United can take solace by knowing they won’t have too long to wait until they kick off again, saying: “This is a good thing.

“You don’t have that much time to recover, but at the same time, you have a chance to get a result, a good result, a good performance to give more confidence to the team.

“Now it’s about going to the Europa League and winning the next game, and all the games that are coming for us.”

Another United player to speak out in the aftermath of the result was Christian Eriksen.

And the Denmark international admitted the Red Devils weren’t good enough on the day, while also saying they cost themselves with their first half display.

“We started on the wrong foot and they have a lot of chances straight from kick-off,” he said.

“I think we can only blame ourselves for not coming into the game at any point. We let them play to their strengths.

“The main focus from this game should be on ourselves and there are a lot of things we need to change and a lot of things we need to do better.

“Today was far from acceptable.”

United have now lost their last three matches against City, with their last triumph over their rivals coming in March 2021.
