Ferguson details Man Utd position change for "sprouting" McTominay

Manchester United icon Sir Alex Ferguson says Scott McTominay reminds him of his former midfielder Darren Fletcher as he heaped praise on his fellow Scot.

McTominay has become a mainstay in the United team this season, taking on a crucial midfielder role for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and adding goals to his game.

He's scored six times in all competitions this season, and has also been a vital part of the Scotland side that has qualified for the delayed European Championships as he's played in both defence and midfield.

Ferguson likes what he sees, and says McTominay is now one of the crucial players at Old Trafford.

"McTominay is now emerging as one of Man United’s big players," said Ferguson in an interview with the Scottish FA.

"When you watch Man Utd pick a team for a big game, McTominay is in it.

"Good character, great trainer, I know a little bit about the boy.

"I signed him when he was seven or eight. He was actually a centre-forward as a kid. He has sprouted, a little bit like Darren (Fletcher) when he first came.

"McTominay is a similar type as Darren, long, lanky, good winner of the ball, good turn of pace going forward, great attitude to the game. It’s really rewarding for me to see a Scot coming through."

Ferguson is hopeful for the Scots at the Euros, and picked out a couple more of their Premier League stars who have impressed him.

"They have been playing quite well. I think it’s the old story, the scoring of goals," he said.

"Their performance level has been very good, I have been impressed.

"I look at the midfield players and I think they are as good as anyone, players playing in England.

"And (Kieran) Tierney has been fantastic at Arsenal, absolutely fantastic, (Andy) Robertson the last two years at Liverpool has been unbelievable."
