Rio Ferdinand told BBC presenter Gary Lineker he was ‘out of order’ for bringing up a throwback picture of the former Manchester United defender on punditry duty at the 2014 World Cup. Lineker compared the ex-defender’s fashion sense to Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal due to their similar orange ties.

Van Gaal sports an orange tie in Qatar to match his side’s kit. And the BBC dug out an old snap of Ferdinand wearing exactly the same attire eight years ago.

The former England defender made his punditry debut in Brazil eight years ago and on one occasion sported a bright orange tie with a blazer.

“Just saw an image there of him (Van Gaal) on the bench, I know where he got the inspiration from. I don’t know whether you’ve seen this. Yeah 2014, remember? There you go,” Lineker said as the BBC showed an image of Ferdinand in an orange tie.

Ferdinand joked: “Ah, two people at the height of fashion. GQ men of the year there look.”

Lineker responded by quipping that the 44-year-old secretly supports the Dutch, saying: “Deep down you’re an Oranje (Netherlands’ nickname) aren’t you?”

“Are you getting free flights there or what?” joked fellow pundit Alan Shearer, referencing EasyJet’s colours. “EasyJet, EasyJet,” Ferdinand said.

Lineker, aware of broadcasting rules around advertising, joked: “Other airlines are available.”

“Oh dear, you’re out of order,” Ferdinand told Lineker. The group continued to laugh about the throwback shot of Ferdinand.
