Rio Ferdinand and Alex Scott may have never played each other on the pitch but their previous associations with Manchester United and Arsenal has made for some light entertainment between the pair in the BBC Sport studio during the World Cup. The pundits were on duty for Qatar’s second group stage match against Senegal and the pair had differing opinions about the home nation’s capability.
Scott claimed she had predicted Qatar would finally break their duck at their home tournament, some 12 years after they were announced as hosts in 2010. Felix Sanchez’s side underwhelmed in their tournament opener, losing 2-0 at the hands of Ecuador to leave their qualifying hopes in tatters.
In a conversation while analysing the game after the full-time whistle, presenter Gary Lineker praised Qatar for giving it a go in the final stages after scoring their first-ever World Cup goal through Mohammed Muntari.
The ex-England striker said: “You’ve got to be pleased for them, they’re under so much pressure, well not pleased for them because they’ll be disappointed to have lost and probably be going out the tournament.”
Scott replied and aimed a light-hearted joke at Ferdinand by calling him out for suggesting he would not include her Qatar prediction in his World Cup video blog: “Gary I’m pleased for them because in case it doesn’t make Rio’s vlog because he’s said he’s not going to put it in there.
“We said Qatar would actually score a goal.”
Lineker reassured the fomer Arsenal Women player that they had in fact captured their conversation on camera as proof of her prediction: “We’ve got it on film because Rio was talking beforehand,” the 61-year-old said.
And former United man Ferdinand backtracked on his initial comment by backing down in his humourous exchange with Scott, saying: “It will make my vlog don’t worry!”

While Qatar enjoyed a moment to remember after finding the net against Senegal, the Gulf nations’ hopes of progressing to the last-16 knockout stage are almost over following their defeat on Friday. Boulaye Dia’s opener in the first half put Senegal in charge before Famara Diedhiou added a second three minutes after the interval as they looked to be cruising towards victory.
But Qatar, despite watching seats begin to empty inside the Al Thumama Stadium as fans became frustrated with their lack of attacking intent, began to test Edouard Mendy late on as the Chelsea produced two fine stops to keep his clean sheet intact.
Muntari was not to be denied, however, when he met a superb cross to make it 2-1, before Senegal clinched all three points through Bamba Dieng with six minutes to go.
They now need the Netherlands to lose against Ecuador to have any hope of qualification, which seems a tall order after Louis van Gaal’s side took the lead through Cody Gakpo in the 4pm kick-off.
