‘FFS!’: Rio Ferdinand laments Christian Eriken’s three-month ankle injury lay-off, while Jamie Carragher calls it a ‘big blow’ to Manchester United – as fans implore the Red Devils to sign to a midfield cover or it’d be ‘disgraceful’

  • Manchester United star Christian Eriksen has been ruled out for three months
  • Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand have reacted to the midfielder’s injury news
  • Fans are insisting that the Red Devils need to sign a replacement on deadline day

Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher lead the reaction to the news of Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen being ruled out for three months.

The Denmark international suffered an ankle injury from Andy Carroll’s reckless lunge on Saturday, that will leave boss Erik ten Hag without the key midfielder for a lengthy period of time.

The 30-year-old midfielder suffered the issue after Carroll tackled him from behind in the 3-1 FA Cup win and he was later seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches.

Former defenders-turned-pundits Ferdinand and Carragher were quick to react to the news alongside numerous fans.

United legend Ferdinand laments the injury to Eriksen, as he tweeted in response to the news, by saying: ‘Ffs.’

Carragher also chimed in and insists it’s a ‘blow’ for United who have been solid in midfield this season.

He said on Sky Sports via Football Daily: ‘It’s a big blow because I think the midfield is basically been the biggest turnaround for Manchester United this season, in terms of Casemiro being there and Eriksen coming in alongside him, and Fernandes in front of them.

‘They’ve had a great little trio for the season, so I think that will be a blow. They’ve got Fred and (Scott) McTominay there, who much over over the last couple of years. I think a lot of that has been a little bit harsh if I’m being honest.

‘I think Fred alongside Casemiro, you’re talking about Brazil’s central midfield over the last few years, they certainly play quite a lot together.

‘It’s a blow for Manchester United, but Man United are not going to win the league, and I don’t think they’re going to fall out of the top four either.

‘I don’t think it’s a massive blow or it’s going to massively affect them in terms of where they finish this season because I think they’re playing that well at the minute that I don’t see them dropping out of the top four now.

‘I think them is too big a gap between themselves now, Arsenal and Manchester City.’

YouTuber and Manchester United Fan Channel presenter Mark Goldbridge also posted: ‘Eriksen OUT For 3 months! And This board are doing nothing. Disgrace.’

The official United fan account said: ‘Donny van de Beek out for the season and Eriksen out for 3 months while we’re still in 4 competitions and playing a game every 3 days until March…

‘Disgraceful if Man Utd don’t sign a midfielder today. An absolute MUST.’

One fan simply added: ‘Nah we need a deadline day masterclass, Eriksen out for 3 months Wtf.’

Despite fans calling for United to sign a midfielder to replace the injured Eriksen, boss ten Hag insists he has enough midfield options to replace him.

‘Of course, he’s disappointed,’ said Ten Hag. ‘We are disappointed, but it happens in top football. It shouldn’t have happened but it did and you have to deal with it.

‘On deadline day it’s difficult. You can’t make policy on such bad injuries, but we have players in the midfield department, good players. We have players who can fill the gap.

‘I think you can never fill that (gap) because every player has his own characteristics and identity. Another player will always fill in in a different way, but it doesn’t mean you have to be less successful.

‘It’s quite clear Christian Eriksen brings top quality to our squad and he has some specifics that are hard to replace, such as his impacts in the final third with his final ball.’
