Fans want Roy Keane’s reaction to ‘childish’ Wout Weghorst touching Anfield sign

Fans are demanding to hear Roy Keane's take on Wout Weghorst touching the 'This is Anfield' sign as he walked through the tunnel ahead of Manchester United's 7-0 thumping at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

United supporters were left raging when footage emerged of the Dutch striker, who grew up supporting Liverpool, tapping the iconic poster as the teams walked out onto the pitch – a big superstitious no-no for non-Liverpool players.

Many suggested Weghorst's contract be ripped up, but others are demanding a much crueller fate – a grilling from United's resident irate Irishman, the vampire of verbal evisceration and Mayor McScowl himself, Mr Roy Keane.

"I need to see Roy Keane’s reaction to Wout Weghorst touching the This is Anfield sign," one fan tweeted. A second said: "Can't wait till Roy Keane finds out, Weghorst will be eating his next meal through a straw.

"Send Weghorst to Roy Keane's house for punishment please," commented another.

In light of the backlash, Weghorst attempted to explain himself, but went full-on Wayne Hennessey with his excuse, claiming he was touching the sign to mess with Holland team-mate Virgil van Dijk, despite the fact the Liverpool defender was in front of him and couldn't see him doing it.

If Keane and Weghorst had a fight, who would win? Let us know in the comments section below.

Keane sat in telling silence in the Sky Sports studio as colleague and former team-mate Gary Neville sparred with Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness in the aftermath of Sunday's result.

When he was eventually prompted to offer some analysis, the crestfallen former United skipper muttered: "A very, very bad day – shocking … the players will be embarrassed, no doubt ashamed with the performance."

The demolition defeat took the wind not just out of Keane's sails, but out of United's too, with last month's Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle and Europa League slaying of Barcelona suddenly something of a distant memory.

They could certainly do with a little whipping back into shape. Send for the Mayor!
