Fans to flock to Amsterdam’s red-light district for sex and drug-fuelled madness
Euro 2020 moves to Amsterdam on Sunday – and it’s not just the city’s football fans who are excited.
Netherlands take on Ukraine in Group C with 16,000 supporters expected inside the Amsterdam Arena.
Frank De Boer will be hoping his side can get off to a winning start in a tricky group which also contains Austria and North Macedonia.
Back in the city centre, the capital’s sex workers and coffee shop owners will simply be grateful for the return of fans in huge numbers.
Amsterdam is the sex and drugs capital of Europe, with its famous red-light district and coffee shops lining the picturesque canals.
But over the last six months, the city’s famous brothels have fallen silent with Covid-19 restrictions forcing them to close.
“I’m extremely happy that we are back open again after such a long time without having work,” a sex worker who identified herself as Kelly told the India Times.

“For many girls it’s a catastrophe, surely because most of them got no support from the government and had to work illegally.”
Brothels are now back open – and they could be set for an influx of traffic if history is anything to go by.
Some England fans made full use of the facilities on offer when the Three Lions faced Netherlands in an international friendly in 2018.
However, mixing football fans with brothels and the city’s notorious coffee shops doesn’t always have a happy ending.
Dutch police arrested 100 England supporters on the streets of Amsterdam three years ago – with several accused of assaulting officers.
A statement from the Dutch police force at the time said: “Yesterday 102 people were arrested due to Ned-Eng football. 2 Dutch and 100 English.”
“35 spent the night in a cell complex. 94 have so far been sent with a fine. The last 8 are still being held, mainly for violence against the police officers.”

Drugs and sex will be back on the agenda for some supporters over the next month as Amsterdam gears up to host four matches during Euro 2020.
The authorities will be hoping the tournament passes without any major incidents as 64,000 fans pile into the Amsterdam Arena across a quartet of matches.
But there can be no guarantees as fans look to make the most of their newfound freedoms after over a year of restrictions imposed across Europe by Covid-19.
