Fans stunned as Steve Cooper avoids sack and gets new Nottingham Forest contract

Nottingham Forest fans are revelling in delight after their club made the shock announcement that head coach Steve Cooper had penned a new deal.

The Welshman – who sparked a remarkable turnaround in the club's fortunes last season in the Championship to earn promotion via the play-offs – had been in discussions with the Midlands side since the summer, but there was no indication that a deal was near.

Cooper's new deal has come as something of a surprise given the club’s torrid run this season; they have just one win to their name this term. In fact, following the 4-0 loss away to Leicester, reports suggested that Cooper might actually be given the chop, with Rafa Benitez linked to the City Ground as his replacement.

But the newly-promoted side have shocked supporters by stating that a fresh deal for the former Swansea City coach had been wrapped up, with a contract signed until 2025.

And Forest fans have flocked online to express their jubilation at the news. One supporter gushed: “Fully deserved, whether we survive or not he’s the man to take this club forward. We know all to well that short term thinking and chopping and changing does not work. Anything this season is a bonus but personally if we go down he’s the man to bring us back stronger.”

A second wrote: “A football club trusting the process and backing its manager in this day and age? You love to see it!.”

A third commented: “Sounds like the Club are committed to Cooper having the full season and if the worse happens help us to get back up again. Very welcome positive news and ends the uncertainty around Cooper. Now time to sort things out on the pitch.”

A last one said: “I can’t help but admire Forest for backing Cooper with a new contract after such a difficult run. Had he been sacked, he would have been a victim of his own success in getting them promoted so quickly. It’s a refreshing change from the usual short-term thinking of football.”

However other supporters are just perplexed at the timing of the news. One wrote: "I swear he was going to get sacked." Another said: "Swear he was getting sacked 2 days ago." A third added: "Everyone tipping that Cooper will get sacked just for him to get a contract extension."

Forest's official announcement said: "It is now important that our focus is solely on football. As a group we are all concentrated and will do everything we can to help the team move up the league table and once again demonstrate our qualities that led us to the Premier League."

Forest are rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after eight games, having won one, drawn one and lost six of their opening fixtures.

Despite the poor form, fans are delighted that the club are sticking with Cooper as they try and lift themselves out of the relegation zone.
