Fans spot Liverpool loanee Grujic’s time wasting ploy to help knock Juventus out

Liverpool loanee Marko Grujic helped dump Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus out of the Champions League with some inspired time-wasting in Italy on Tuesday evening.

Porto substitute Grujic won his side a free-kick in the closing stages of extra-time, and while clutching his face on the turf he took a quick peek to see what referee Bjorn Kuipers had decided.

The moment has been compared to the antics of Sergio Busquets for Barcelona against Inter back in 2010 and also David Luiz against Manchester United for Chelsea.

Grujic has been praised for his attitude by Jurgen Klopp in the past as he struggles to get a first-team chance at Liverpool with loans at Red Star Belgrade, Cardiff, Hertha and now Porto.

One Twitter user said in response: "That is funny. Reminds me of a toddler when they want attention!”

A second added: “Everyone thinks it’s shameless right up to the point when someone from the team they support does it. Then it’s seen as clever play.”

A third continued: “Busquets is proud of him.”

With a fourth adding: “My midfielder.”

Grujic told Serbian outlet Kurir of his Liverpool future in January: “In every conversation, be it Klopp or one of the directors, they always remind me that I am a player of great potential.

“But when I get into the system I don’t get a chance. It confuses me a little.

I told the people from Liverpool that I wanted to play. Hertha, where I spent two beautiful years, was an option, as were some other Bundesliga sides, [but] Porto happened.”

  • Klopp said of Grujic way back in 2016: “We’re very pleased because Marko is a big talent and we’ve seen him a lot of times.

“When I came here, our scouts showed me some footage of a very skilled player from Red Star Belgrade.

“We watched it, we spoke to him, we met each other – he’s a good boy, a young boy but plays an important role at the moment at Red Star, who are the best team in Serbia.

“To describe him, I would say he’s a tall boy, but quick and good at technical things. He can play passes and can dribble. But he is young, so he has to develop. He will do this, so everything is okay.”
