Fans slate Lukaku’s ‘generic PR’ apology as they rip into Chelsea interview
A host of Chelsea fans have slammed Romelu Lukaku after the striker’s “generic” public apology on Tuesday.
The Blues star sparked controversy for his interview with Sky Sports Italia last week where he revealed he was unhappy at Stamford Bridge and hinted towards an Inter Milan return, just months after signing for the club for a record £97.5million fee.
Lukaku’s insensitive comments left the Chelsea faithful outraged and he was subsequently dropped from the squad for a crucial Premier League clash with Liverpool.
Chelsea have now posted a video of the 28-year-old apologising, but many supporters were left unfazed by the Belgian’s attempts to patch things up.
Lukaku said in the apology video: “To the fans, I’m sorry for the upset that I caused.
“You guys know the connection that I have with this club since my teenage years, so I totally understand you guys being upset.
“Obviously, it’s up to me to restore your trust and I’ll do my best to show commitment everyday on the training ground and in the games, trying to make sure that we win games.
“Also to the manager, I apologise and to my teammates and the board because I think it was not the right moment and I want to move on from this and make sure that we start winning football games and that I perform for the team in the best manner.”
Yet a large number of fans reacting on social media remained unconvinced, with some believing that the striker was forced into making an apology by the club where he is under contract for the next four-and-a-half years.

One fan wrote in response: “Generic PR message. Will take a lot more than that to win the fans over.”
Another outraged user tweeted: “It's hard to believe now he actually means these words and not just saying it after seeing everyone backed [Thomas] Tuchel over him.”
A third commented: “It’s time to do your talking on the pitch Romelu, for all the fans that have supported you.”
But another supporter chose to see the funny side, saying: “Score a hat-trick tomorrow and celebrate in front of [Antonio] Conte for a true apology.”
Lukaku is set to face his former Inter Milan manager, now in charge of Tottenham, in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening.
