England have qualified for the knockout rounds of the World Cup with the best record of any team in the competition.

Gareth Southgate’s side ended the group stages of the tournament with the joint-most points and the best goal difference out of any team in Qatar, after scoring nine goals and only conceding two.

There had been concerns for the Three Lions after England’s underwhelming draw with the USA but fans have since flooded to social media to suggest they have a ‘great squad and manager’.

England have qualified for the round of 16 of the World Cup with the best record of any team

Gareth Southgate – who initially faced criticism – has been heralded by fans on social media

After Brazil’s loss to Cameroon on Friday night, it was confirmed that England would have the joint-highest points tally – seven – out of any team in the World Cup.

Fans couldn’t hold back their reactions, with one user writing: ‘Well well well, England finish the group stage with the best record. It’s almost as if we have a great squad and the manager knows what he’s doing.’

‘So England end up qualifying with the best record of the group stage. In statistically the toughest group. That meltdown post USA by those part time England fans was a bit embarrassing wasn’t it,’ another said.

One user argued: ‘So despite apparently playing “safety first” and “leaving the handbrake on”, Southgate’s England qualify from the group stage with the best record of any team in the tournament.’

England conceded just two goals – both in the opening match – in their entire group campaign

Another, rather bluntly, wrote: ‘Turns out England have the best record after the group stages with 7 points and +7 GD’.

Some users even jokingly suggested that the trophy was already clinched given their impressive record.

‘Well that confirms it – England with 7 points and the best goal difference. We’ve done it! We’ve won the #WorldCup,’ one said.

‘England qualifying with the best group record in the tournament… IIIIIITTTTSSSSS….,’ another wrote.

The Three Lions ensured they qualified for the round of 16 after an impressive group stage performance at the World Cup.

They opened their campaign with a confident 6-2 win over Iran where Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka bagged a brace, before struggling to a 0-0 draw with the USA days later.

They finished their group stage campaign with a 3-0 win over home nation Wales after Marcus Rashford scored a brilliant double.

They’ll be hoping to carry their group stage form into the round of 16 when they take on Senegal on Sunday.
