Fans joke Man City ‘Emptihad’ expansion ‘like buying bigger bucket in a drought’

Football fans have slammed Manchester City for expanding their stadium – with some claiming they can't currently sell out the Etihad Stadium.

City have dealt with constant jibes from rival fans over the past decade about their stadium, which has been dubbed the 'Emptihad'. However, City want to increase the current capacity of 53,400 to 60,000 by expanding the North Stand.

And City have submitted their planning application for the £300million expansion, which will also feature a sky bar overlooking the pitch and a stadium roof walk experience. A 3,000-capacity fan zone, a new club shop and museum, and a 400-bed hotel have also been proposed.

One fan joked: "Like buying a bigger bucket in the middle of a drought!"

"Can’t even sell out a 53,400 seater stadium yet they wanna go and waste another £300million on another 6,600 seats f***ing hell, make it make sense," a second fumed. And a third said: "City about to spend £300m so that their stadium can be emptier. Crazy!"

"F*** me they can barely fill the ground as it is. More sportswashing," a fourth fumed. While another added: "What a waste of money. They only sell out against United now!" And Dominos Pizza wrote: "Like us making the boxes bigger but keeping the pizzas the same size."

City announced their intention to expand the stadium in August. Danny Wilson, managing director of Manchester City Operations, said: "As with all Club developments, ensuring our local community benefit is a key priority.

"And we believe these proposals will deliver long-term economic and social opportunities, building on the regeneration work delivered in east Manchester by City Football Group since 2008."

The Etihad was last expanded in 2015 – when a third tier was added to the South Stand, adding an extra 6,000 seats, making it the fifth largest stadium in the Premier League.
