Gerard Pique’s new Kings League handed football fans an unexpected guessing game at the weekend, as an unknown LaLiga star took to the pitch wearing a Mexican mask to conceal his identity.
It is believed the mysterious player, who also sported long black sleeves and gloves to hide his arms and hands, was eager to remain anonymous during the seven-a-side match, as his club and agent were not happy for him to take part.
He was filmed arriving in a chauffeured car before kick-off and was already dressed in his full attire, which displayed the name ‘Enigma’ and the number 69 on the back.

Fans across football have continued to debate who the masked individual could be, based largely on an enigmatic description Pique gave ahead of Sunday’s match between Kings League outfits XBUYER TEAM and Kunisports.
The ex-Barcelona star, who announced his professional retirement in November, promoted the game on Twitter and said: ‘For those of you who want the pure stuff, we will make a historic announcement relating to a player who will take part on Sunday.’
He later revealed that a ‘Primera Division [LaLiga] footballer under the age of 30 will play wearing a Mexican wrestling mask to hide his face and long sleeves to cover tattoos’.

Whether Pique’s tattoos remark is a helpful clue or simply a red herring remains to be seen.
Basing any guesses on the player’s footballing display alone would be a challenge as he failed to make a serious impact on the match, perhaps struggling as a result of the mask.
Several fans suggested Isco, whose contract was terminated by Sevilla in December, was the mysterious star, while others proposed it was Celta Vigo outcast Denis Suarez.
As speculation of Suarez’s involvement snowballed, the 29-year-old midfielder denied the claims on a stream with journalist Gerard Romero and said: ‘It’s not me!’
Pol Lirola and Rodrigo Riquelme, who play for Elche and Girona respectively, were also put forward as suggestions during the social media hunt.

Not long after XBUYER TEAM’S 1-0 win against Kunisports – a team led by president and ex-Argentina international Sergio Aguero – fans made what appeared to be a breakthrough on social media.
Eagle-eyed supporters spotted part of a neck tattoo underneath the footballer’s mask, proposing the player was likely recently released Cadiz forward Nano Mesa.
Despite his well-travelled career across various Spanish top flight and second tier clubs, including Levante, SD Eibar and Real Zaragoza, Mesa would likely be viewed as a slight anticlimax following the high-profile appearances of World Cup winner Joan Capdevila and LA Galaxy icon Javier Hernandez in the Kings League so far.
For now, Pique has vowed that he will not reveal the identity of the player.
