Jamie Carragher has been bombard by baffled Premier League supporters for saying that Manchester City and Liverpool have formed a better rivalry than Manchester United and Arsenal had around the turn of the century.

Following the arrival of Arsene Wenger in north London in 1996, the Frenchman enjoyed fierce competition with Sir Alex Ferguson and the duo went on to share title triumphs in each of the subsequent eight seasons with three and five respectively.

Liverpool and City going head-to-head for the title this season following three triumphs for Pep Guardiola and one for Jurgen Klopp across the last four campaigns.

Carragher tweeted out on Friday (April 8): "This @ManCity @LFC rivalry is the best we’ve ever had in English football!! We’ve never had the two best teams & managers in the world together fighting it out."

To which a fan wrote: "In the eight seasons between 96-97 and 03-04, United won five titles, Arsenal three. Twice just one point separated them."

With a second adding: "I think you best remember about the PL's BEST every rivalry with the best 2 Managers were Wenger & Ferguson."

A third continued: "Trying to erase Fergie v Wenger because you were playing back then and didn’t get a sniff of a league doesn’t make it true."

And a fourth concluded: "Over the past 5 seasons, Liverpool have only finished in the top 2.. twice. As a neutral, nothing will ever top the rivalry between United and Arsenal."

Elaborating in his article for The Telegraph, Carragher said: "I can hear the dissent from Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea fans as I argue this.

"There are plenty of head-to-heads worthy of comparison. Many will claim that the fixtures overseen by Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger at their peak were of similar quality and packed just as much of an emotional punch."

Adding: "But their rivalry never infiltrated the Champions League, aside from a semi-final in 2009, by which time Arsenal were not the force they were."
