Fans eat their words over the Newcastle star who everyone said needs dropping

Premier League fans have been made to eat humble pie over the ability of Miguel Almiron – who scored a sixth goal in as many outings in Newcastle's 4-0 demolition of Aston Villa.

The 28-year-old fired home from outside the area on his trusty left-foot to add to his strikes against Tottenham, Everton, Brentford and brace against Fulham across the last calendar month.

That change in fortunes comes after he scored only five goals across 64 games in the last two domestic seasons – which led to plenty of criticism.

One fan wrote back in May while listing players including Almiron: "Said it for months. This is now completely exposing it. Not good enough. Sell some. Drop some."

A second agreed at the time: "Almiron works hard, but ineffective."

A third wrote: "For an attacking player, Almiron stops almost every attack, never crosses, always cuts back and then plays the ball sideways or backwards."

And a fourth concluded: "Miggy hasn’t a clue where or when to run."

Fast forward five months and those type of comments are nowhere to be seen, with praise for for forward coming from around the world on social media.

One said: "Almiron is scoring for fun now. Does so much for the team."

A second wrote: "And to think we used to laugh at this one."

A third added: "His left foot is miracle from God."

Almiron, who also became the first Newcastle player to score in three successive home Premier League games since Yoan Gouffran in 2013.

The Paraguay international joined the club from Atlanta United back in 2019, but has taken a while to find his goalscoring boots as he reaches the peak age of his career.

Eddie Howe will be hoping Almiron can stay in the goals as the World Cup closes in, with league fixtures against Southampton and Chelsea before the break.

The manager said of his latest goal: "It was an incredible strike. He has got a great left foot. It was a pin-point finish. He never stopped and kept going."
