Fan’s design that ‘definitely isn’t a towel’ could help Wrexham beat rule change

Wrexham could bypass Football League rules to keep Ben Tozer in a job – after the defender joked a ban on towels could ruin his career.

Tozer, 33, has utilised his long-throw to perfection since moving to north Wales but a new ruling will to stop him drying the ball in League Two – which would limit his throwing distance in wet weather.

An opportunistic football fan has since designed a new 'scarf' which looks a lot wider and more absorbent than the usual fabric covering.

Football fanatic Simon Connor took to social media this week to try and get his design spotted by Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

His post read: "Prototypes are in for the new Wrexham 23/24 (definitely not a towel) supporters scarves.

"Free for all fans in Row 1&2. Get them to Ben Tozer when it's raining."

One fan said in response: "This is genius." However, one fan pointed out that the ban includes using items that are handed over by fans – but Tozer already has his own plan.

Tozer had joked to The Leader: "I might have upset someone in the EFL because they're trying to ruin my career. I nearly had to hand my retirement straight away.

"I understand it because some people see it as anti-football, but it's part of football. Throw-ins are just like a corner or a penalty, they are set pieces.

"We had a bit of an advantage but there are ways around everything and I've got the shirt that I'm wearing. I can still dry the ball with that. I'm sure there will be other ways around it as well."

The Wrexham star might just need to wear a thick undershirt in a bid to aid his set-piece brilliance, with Phil Parkinson's men among the favourites for promotion.

A supercomputer has also tipped Wrexham as champions with Stockport and Notts County going up automatically.

At the bottom end of the table, Morecambe and Harrogate Town have been earmarked for relegation, with Crawley Town just about achieving safety.
