England supporters have been left incredulous after Harry Kane was not awarded a penalty after appearing to be brought down by Dayot Upamecano.

Kane and his team-mates reacted well to falling behind to Aurelien Tchouameni’s long-range strike – pinning the France defence back and creating a number of openings.

The England captain had picked the ball up on the right-hand side and got goal side of the France centre-back before being brought down by the Bayern Munich star.

There was a short delay as Wilton Sampaio waited to be advised by VAR as to whether he should go to the monitor to review his initial decision. However, he shortly after waved play on, leaving supporters in Qatar and home bemused by the decision.

VAR’s call may have been that contact was initiated outside the area – outside of its remit in that instance. However, supporters still questioned the lack of awarding of a foul by the referee.

‘Omg England have been robbed!’ one supporter wrote.

‘England are getting robbed. What a disgrace,’ one agreed.

Another angrily wrote: ‘How the f*** is that not a penalty?’

‘How’s that not a penalty?! F****** shambles,’ another wrote in agreement.

Rob Green on 5Live offered the suggestion that it starting outside the area was why VAR did not have another look.

‘The only suggestion I can come up with is that it wasn’t in the penalty area but Kane fell in the area, it looked like it,’ he said. ‘There’s certainly contact in and around the area.’

Wikipedia appeared to have been edited by England fans upset over decisions made by referee Wilton Sampaio.

One edit changed the description of the referee to ‘a Brazilian cheat’, while another stated the referee had lost his ‘guide dog’.

‘Please return dog if found, the dog has a match to ref,’ the Wikipedia page reads.

Meanwhile, Lee Dixon on ITV was left shocked the referee was not sent over to his monitor for another look.

‘There’s a leg in there, it looks like it might just be slightly outside the box,’ he said. ‘Upamencano, his leg goes in between Kane’s legs. I think it’s a foul.’

Peter Walton, adjudicating on refereeing decisions for ITV at this year’s World Cup, agreed with Dixon.

Earlier in the piece, England had been left questioning the Brazilian official after he failed to award a foul to Bukayo Saka in the build up to Tchouameni’s early first half strike.

Saka was fouled just some 25 seconds before the game’s opening goal.

‘Clear foul on Saka ignored, but that’s normal at this point,’ one fan wrote.

‘Rice got skinned and someone should’ve closed him down but it was definitely a foul on Saka, that’s a disgrace,’ another added.
