Fans baffled by ‘three goal of the season contenders’ in one day of non-league

Football fans have been left stunned by three unbelievable strikes all scored in non-league this weekend.

There must have been something in the air on English shores on Saturday (August 19) afternoon, as AFC Fylde's Nick Haughton, AFC Portchester's Lee Wort and South Shields' Tom Broadbent netted worldies – and bizarrely, all in the space of 10 minutes.

Midfielder Haughton did so first, letting fly from inside his own half during Fylde's National League fixture away at Wealdstone and catching the opposition goalkeeper way off his line.

Shortly after that happened in the capital, Wort took a punt at goal straight from kick-off and also got the better of a napping keeper in Portchester's 8-1 FA Cup win at Tadley Calleva – one of four goals he scored in the preliminary round clash.

Around the same time something special was witnessed in the North East too, with centre-back Tom Broadbent unleashing a rocket from just past the centre circle to earn South Shields a 1-0 National League North victory against Scarborough.

The trio of goals were each later uploaded to social media by the respective clubs and quickly gained traction, with non-league expert Ollie Bayliss sharing all three to his 59k Twitter followers.

Fans reacted to all three in amazement. For the first, one replied: "Nick Haughton is one special player." Another pointed out: "Not the first time he’s done that."

And a third tipped it to win awards as they wrote: "Fantastic technique and strike, early contender for goal of the season."

Wort's goal for Portchester had one viewer exclaiming: "What a goal." A second commented: "This is wild."

Before a third claimed: "In all my years of watching football I've never seen anyone score direct from a kick-off before. Well done Lee, well spotted."

Broadbent was also given his flowers, with one supporter arguing: "Worldie is an understatement." A second added: "That was a #screamer!!!"

While a third posted: "Wow… Had to watch this twice as I couldn't believe my eyes first time."
