Many football fans needed a second glance at their television screens when they thought they saw Sonia from Eastenders tattooed on Argentina hero Gabriel Montiel.

The Sevilla central defender converted the winning spot kick that won Argentina their first World Cup since 1986. He was the fourth penalty taker to successfully score from 12 yards after French duo Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni both missed for France.

As emotion and happiness descended, Montiel took his shirt off and embraced heroic goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. However, as he removed his jersey, fans thought they caught a glimpse of iconic Eastenders character Sonia.

On his arm, Montiel is believed to have a tattoo of the virgin Mary on his left shoulder. However, from a distance, it could very easily be mistaken for Natalie Cassidy’s character on Albert Square.

And, it is very safe to say, this sight left many football fans rather amused. "Montiel has a tattoo of Sonia Jackson on his arm and scored the winning penalty in a World Cup Final,” one fan wrote on social media.

"LOL. We noticed that tattoo last night and were laughing at it." another supporter added. "I said the exact same thing last night. Glad it's not just me that saw the similarity,” another laughed on social media.

However, some supporters felt Call the Midwife star Miranda Hart was the one occupying a space on the World Cup winner’s shoulder. "I was thinking Miranda Hart but I could be convinced by Sonia from Eastenders,” one other fan wrote online.

Montiel will likely be adding a brand new tattoo to his already wide array of tatts. It is a common practice for players to get a tattoo of the World Cup trophy soon after winning the competition.

There will likely be a very special place reserved on the Sevilla ace’s body.
