FA confirm extra ban for Virgil van Dijk after Liverpool star’s tirade at ref

Virgil van Dijk has been slapped with an additional one-match ban as well as a hefty fine after his red card for Liverpool against Newcastle United last month. The Dutchman was sent off for a foul on Alexander Isak in the first half of the game, which the Reds went on to win 2-1 thanks to a couple of late goals from Darwin Nunez.

Van Dijk was left furious and responded by angrily shouting and pointing in the face of referee John Brooks before confronting fourth official Stuart Attwell. He was later charged by the FA for behaving in an improper manner and using ‘abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official’ on top of his one-match ban for the initial red card.

The Liverpool defender has since admitted the charge, meaning that he faces an extra one-game ban. He served his initial ban against Aston Villa last weekend but will now also be sidelined for Liverpool’s next match against Wolves after the international break.

Van Dijk has also been slapped with a £100,000 fine, with an FA statement confirming: “Virgil van Dijk has been suspended for one match and fined £100,000 for breaching FA Rule E3.1 during Liverpool’s Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday 27 August.

“The defender admitted that he acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards a match official after being sent off in the 29th minute, and the sanctions were subsequently imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission.”
