EXCLUSIVE: Mauricio Pochettino holds further talks with Chelsea as he closes in on becoming the new manager at Stamford Bridge… though current interim boss Frank Lampard is likely to keep the role until the end of the season
- The former Tottenham boss is expected to take the job at Stamford Bridge
- Mauricio Pochettino has previously held ‘positive talks’ with the Blues
- Chelsea legend Frank Lampard is likely to keep the role for the rest of the season
Mauricio Pochettino held further talks with Chelsea today as he moves closer to taking over at Stamford Bridge.
Mail Sport understands that club officials spoke again with the former Tottenham manager, who is expected to return to the Premier League with his ex-club’s bitter rivals.
Previous conversations have been described as ‘incredibly positive’ with Pochettino, who left Paris Saint-Germain last July, ‘seriously impressing’ Blues execs.
It remains to be seen whether the 51-year-old will be installed before the end of the season.
However, while not ruling that out, those with knowledge of the situation believe it is more likely that caretaker manager Frank Lampard, a club legend, will be given to the end of the campaign.

Pochettino would be the fourth different manager of Chelsea since Todd Boehly’s takeover
Such a scenario would allow Pochettino, who departed Spurs in November 2019, five months after he had taken them to a Champions League final, a fresh start.
It would also afford him a full pre-season to implement his methods and work with his new squad before taking control for a game.
Earlier today Lampard refused to be drawn on the situation. Ahead of Chelsea’s fixture with Brentford he said: I’m not going to get involved, it’s all speculation.’
When asked if he expected to be in charge for the remainder of the season Lampard responded: ‘I wouldn’t expect anything in football, but we have come in to a club with big difficulties with not a lot of time.
‘A lot of factors as to the four games I have been here, the team and club have been struggling for a while, we are here to help. Things won’t change in a short time.’
