Celtic and Rangers B teams are set to return to Scotland’s Lowland League next season.

The Old Firm colts were granted admission to the fifth tier of the Scottish football pyramid as a one-off experiment last summer.

And the Glasgow clubs have contacted teams in that division this week seeking permission to repeat the exercise.

Due to hold a general meeting of clubs on March 21, the SLFL will listen to presentations from Celtic and Rangers before taking a vote on whether to host the guest teams again in season 2022-23.

A Lowland League spokesperson told Sportsmail: ‘A formal discussion about any future involvement of guest clubs is scheduled to take place at our planned General Meeting with clubs later this month.

‘As ever, we are open to ideas that can progress the Lowland League – and Scottish football as a whole – but it has to be a collaborative process with our members.’

Despite a report last month suggesting Hearts planned to launch a B team of their own, Lowland League sides have had no contact from Tynecastle.

Under current arrangements, both Celtic and Rangers pay £25,000 each as an entry payment for participation, with neither colts team eligible for promotion.

Celtic B currently sit second in the table, 13 points adrift of Bonnyrigg Rose, with Rangers in fourth.

Despite the presence of the Old Firm pair, Bonnyrigg secured the title – and a slot in the Pyramid play-off – with a win over Cumbernauld earlier this month.
