EXC: Fraser moved to train with Newcastle U21s after being frozen out

EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Fraser is moved to train with Newcastle U21s after being frozen out of the team since October – and his future under Eddie Howe appears to be over on the eve of the Carabao Cup final

  • The winger will now train with the Magpies Under 21s at their academy base

Newcastle winger Ryan Fraser is now training with the club’s Under 21s and is unlikely to return to the senior set-up.

The 28-year-old has not featured since October under Eddie Howe and the decision has been taken for him to relocate to the academy base.

Sportsmail understands the club sees Fraser’s future elsewhere and it is expected he will move on this summer. The player, too, has expressed a desire for more game-time.

The Scotland international joined the Magpies on a free transfer from Bournemouth in 2020. His early progress was slowed by fitness issues and he made just nine starts in his first season under Steve Bruce.

Fraser fared better when Howe was appointed in November, 2021 and spoke of his determination to impress his former Bournemouth boss.

Sportsmail understands a parting of the ways this summer seems inevitable for both parties

Howe revealed at the time that the pair had moved on from any issues arising from Fraser’s refusal to sign a short-term deal with the Cherries in the summer of 2020.

That was when his contract expired and the Premier League resumed following the Covid-19 outbreak.

Fraser said he could not risk getting injured and Bournemouth were subsequently relegated. Howe left the club on the back of it.

But he played an important role during Newcastle’s revival last season as they climbed clear of the bottom three.

He won a place in the side in the early weeks of this campaign but his last start came in September against Bournemouth.

There was talk of a January exit but that never materialised. Now, with Newcastle set to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final and pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League, it has been decided they will do so without Fraser.
