Ex-Real Madrid star Freddy Rincon fighting for life after bus ploughs into car
Former Real Madrid midfielder and Colombia international Freddy Rincon was left fighting for his life after his car collided with a bus.
Shocking CCTV footage showed the horror crash between his Ford Escape and a bus. Medics confirmed he had survived a near-three-hour operation but remained in a “very critical” condition in intensive care with severe head injuries.
Cali’s mayor Jorge Ivan Ospina has confirmed the Ford went through a red light in the crash just before 4.45am local time on Monday before colliding with the bus which had no passengers. The 28-year-old bus driver, who subsequently passed a breathaliser test, was taken to hospital with injuries which included a broken left leg. Rincon was the most seriously hurt of the people in the car that jumped the red light. He was not breath-tested at the scene because of the extent of his injuries.
Mr Ospina confirmed investigators were still trying to establish if a fourth person had been in the car Rincon was in along with 20-year-old Maria Manuela Patino and Diana Lorena Cortes, 43. The younger woman also passed a breath test. Officials have also said the car was owned by a man named as Tomas Humberto Diaz Valencia.
State prosecutors are now being urged to go public with the results of their ongoing probe into the traffic accident. “This is an incident which has led to injuries and material damage and the Attorney General’s Office should publicise details of the investigation into such a painful episode,” Cali mayor Mr Ospina said.
“We’re talking here about an important occurrence and we need to join forces to make sure we find out what really happened here. “We all want Freddy Rincon to recover.”
Rincon played in three World Cups in the nineties and scored 17 goals in his 84 appearances for the Colombia national team. As well as Real Madrid and Corinthians, Rincon also played for Napoli in Italy and Palmeiras and Santos in Brazil.
His most important and most memorable goal is the one he scored against West Germany in Milan on 19 June during the 1990 World Cup. He fired the ball through the legs of the German keeper late on in the game to secure the draw his team needed to avoid elimination from the tournament at the group stages.
