Former Premier League goalkeeper Artur Boruc used to turn up to training “stinking of booze”.

Boruc, who played for Southampton and more recently Bournemouth, first made a name for himself as a brilliant shot-stopper between the sticks for Scottish giants Celtic. He joined in 2005 and spent five years with the Glasgow side, where he won the Scottish Premier League three times.

But the Polish international, now 43 and retired, was a true maverick on and off the pitch. And his love for drinking meant he had no regard for the rules while he was at Celtic.

Speaking on ‘Under The Cosh,’ Boruc’s former Celtic teammate Paul Caddis said: “What a guy. He used to turn up for training at 10.25am rolling out of a black cab, stinking of booze. But he was an unbelievable goalie.

“What I was like with food, he was like that with drink. He could turn up the next day [after drinking] and still make top saves. A different character.

“[Manager Gordon] Strachan knew about the drinking but he also knew how good he was. Strachan hated the fact he did that but knew he was f***ing phenomenal.”

Former defender Caddis went on to tell several more stunning stories involving Boruc, including one where Strachan warned his players against going out in Glasgow due to repeated scuffles with Rangers fans.

The Pole volunteered to accompany his younger teammates on nights out to ‘look after them’, which led Caddis to say: “He was the worst guy in the world to look after you. He was a f***ing maniac.”

Boruc also stirred up controversy by going into Glasgow's city centre after an Old Firm derby, seemingly unfazed by the hundreds of opposition fans out to get him.

He apparently responded by saying “If they want to fight me, I’ll just fight them.”
