A number of Cristiano Ronaldo’s old Manchester United team-mates reportedly intervened late last night to stop him from joining Manchester City. The Juventus star now looks set for a sensational return to United, who are now closing in on their man following a call between the player and Sir Alex Ferguson.
In what has been a dramatic last few hours, United have now moved ahead of City in the race for the 36-year-old, who has now played his last game for Juventus.
City have now pulled out of the running and decided they won’t be pursuing a deal to sign Ronaldo.
That has given United a free run on snapping up their club icon, who left Old Trafford 12 years ago.
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol reports that City were Ronaldo’s first choice before a dramatic swing of events…

He tweeted: “Manchester City will not be signing Cristiano Ronaldo. He was not in their plans this summer. They were offered the chance to sign him. City were his first choice.
“He does not fit the profile of player they are looking for. Ronaldo now looking at other options.”
ESPN are now reporting that Ronaldo looked on course to sign for City until a number of his old team-mates texted him to convince him to wait on United.
Mark Ogden tweeted: “Man Utd now frontrunners to sign Ronaldo.
“Negotiations and text exchanges with former team-mates in early hours of this morning appear to have swung the deal in United’s favour.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed earlier today that United were ready to sign Ronaldo and offered him the chance to return to Old Trafford.
Pep Guardiola did not appear confident when speaking shortly after, hinting that City may miss out on Ronaldo.
“Cristiano was at Juventus, I think a Juventus player. Only I can say that in three or four days left in the transfer window everything can happen,” he said.
“In my personal view there are few players, Ronaldo and Messi included, that they decide where they are going to play. They are the leading role in the negotiations. Right now I’m delighted with the squad we have and we’ll stay the same.
“There are many things right now that are far, far away.”
