Modern day stars of Manchester United and Arsenal can look forward to a comfortable retirement after their playing days are over.

Players from past eras did not have that same luxury. From publicans to policeman and firefighters to funeral directors, football stars from the 1970s, 80s and 90s often found themselves in normal, run-of-the-mill jobs after hanging up their boots.

Take former United and Gunners star Jim Leighton, for example. Leighton, who went to four World Cups with Scotland, represented the Red Devils from 1988 until 1992, following a certain Sir Alex Ferguson from Aberdeen.

Leighton joined the club for £750,000 and would go on to make 73 appearances for United. He started the first game in the 1990 FA Cup final against Crystal Palace but lost his place to Les Sealey for the replay.

The 64-year-old also had a spell on loan at Arsenal in 1991 before stints in his native Scotland with Dundee, Hibernian and Aberdeen.

Nowadays, he works in business development for Dominion Gas, a gas firm based in Aberdeen. Prior to that, Leighton was a sales manager for the Norsafe Group, a global market leader in marine life-saving systems for the merchant and offshore markets.

It's unlikely current United and Arsenal stars like Bruno Fernandes, Martin Odegaard and Marcus Rashford will need to find normal, every day jobs once their own football careers come to an end.

Both sides will be focused on the task in hand on Sunday with the Premier League title at stake. Mikel Arteta's side were eight points clear of the chasing pack ahead of the weekend's fixtures, following their win over Tottenham last Sunday

United closed the gap on Manchester City after their derby day win over Pep Guardiola's side but surrendered ground after being held to a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in midweek.
